Psychotherapy

The social–emotional issues of children and adolescents with NVLD can include skill deficits, poor self-esteem, susceptibility to anxiety and depressed mood, possibly less well-developed internal working models of self and others, and the potential to be less emotionally/behaviorally regulated and trusting of others. It is not yet known if children with NVLD have difficulties establishing a secure attachment with caregivers but worthy of further exploration and consideration when working with them. Skill deficits commonly include problems with interpreting social nonverbal cues, effectively demonstrating those cues, inferential interpretation of information, using pragmatic language, perspective-taking, and sometimes behavioral/mood dysregulation potentially related to sensory sensitivities and anxiety (Davis & Broitman, 2011; Palombo, 2001; Stewart, 2002). Some primary treatment approaches to address the above issues include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness and stress reduction (MBSR), relaxation, and relational therapies originating from psychoanalytical theory. These therapies can occur in the context of individual, family, or peer group therapy. There are also additional therapies that guide clinical methods used in family (as discussed earlier) or group, e.g., gestalt.
